The world game
At home, a family navigates a crowd of sanctions and house rules. The world game is the mirror image: one rulebook, one authority, and only national teams. This is who governs softball in every country, and how to find yours.
Every country's softball runs through one recognized national federation, and that federation is the country's single seat at the World Baseball Softball Confederation. WBSC is the only body the International Olympic Committee recognizes for softball and baseball, and it owns every event involving national teams, up to and including the Olympics.
WBSC was formed in 2013 from the merger of the International Baseball Federation and the International Softball Federation, and it is headquartered in Pully, Switzerland, beside the Olympic capital of Lausanne. Its authority carries one principle worth holding onto, because it is the reverse of the US travel scene: only national federations are members, and only national teams contest world and Olympic titles. A private club is never a member, and can never field a national team. Governance runs upward from the player to a national federation, not outward across competing brands.
WBSC's own members page lists 192 national federations, 185 full and 7 provisional, plus 15 associated members, across 142 countries and territories, and the softball side alone spans roughly 128 countries. WBSC quotes slightly different figures in different places, so the count is best read as a moving number in the low 190s rather than a fixed one. The unifying fact is the book: they all adopt the WBSC Official Rules of Softball for international play, and that book governs any international game whether or not WBSC runs it. Where the US weekend scene is many brands with many house rules, the world layer is the opposite. One book, many flags.
WBSC organizes the world into five continental bodies. Each runs its own qualifiers and championships on the road to the World Cups and the Olympics. The colors below carry down into the catalog.
The women's softball world ranking spans 70 national programs. Two nations trade the very top: as of July 2026 Japan holds world No. 1 and the United States No. 2, and between them they have owned first place for the sport's modern history.
The next tier shuffles with each event: Mexico, Italy, Czechia, Australia, the Netherlands, and China all sit inside the world top twelve. This order shifts with every World Cup and continental result, so the live ranking is the truth, not this snapshot: wbsc.org/en/rankings/softball-w.
Organized by confederation, the leading softball nations and the body that runs the game in each. Where a federation's official site is confirmed, it is linked. For the full membership of every country and territory, the WBSC directory in the sources below is the complete, current list.
Americas
Also competing across the Americas: Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Nicaragua, Belize, Honduras, a 2025 ranking debut, and the US Virgin Islands, among others. Each holds a WBSC seat through one national federation; the full list is in the sources below.
Asia
Also across Asia: the Philippines, a Southeast Asian power whose exact registered federation name is best confirmed through WBSC, plus Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and India, among others. Softball Asia is headquartered in Taipei.
Europe
Also across Europe: Spain, France (FFBS), Germany, Greece, and Sweden, among others. WBSC Europe counts about 39 softball members, and its softball arm was formerly the European Softball Federation.
Oceania
Also across the Pacific: American Samoa, Guam, and other island members hold WBSC seats through their national bodies.
Africa
A growing base across Africa: Uganda, a 2025 ranking entrant, alongside Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and more. The Women's Softball African Championship is the continental qualifier.
Every federation name and standing here was checked against a primary or current source in July 2026. Membership totals and rankings move; where a country's exact registered federation name could not be pinned to one official form, it is marked rather than asserted. The complete, current membership of every country and territory lives at the WBSC directory.
